The Jordaan is one of Amsterdam’s most popular neighborhoods. Canals, restaurants, markets — and an increasing number of fitness options. But which one suits you? The choice is bigger than you think, and each option has its own pros and cons.

In this article, we cover the different types of training spots in the Jordaan and help you make the right choice based on your goals, budget and personal preference.

The big chains: affordable but crowded

In and around the Jordaan, you’ll find branches of well-known chains like Basic-Fit and TrainMore. The advantage is clear: low monthly costs (25-40 euros), long opening hours and plenty of equipment.

The downside? Crowds. Especially between 17:00 and 20:00, these gyms are packed. You wait for machines, share changing rooms with dozens of others and the atmosphere is impersonal. If you know what you’re doing and don’t need guidance, this can work. But for most people, it becomes a grind after a few months.

Boutique studios: atmosphere and community

The Jordaan has a growing selection of boutique studios specializing in specific training methods: yoga, pilates, HIIT, spinning or boxing. These studios offer small groups, a polished atmosphere and a sense of community.

Prices are higher — expect 15-25 euros per class or 100-200 euros per month for an unlimited membership. Instruction quality varies, but generally you get more attention than at a large chain. The downside is that you’re tied to the class schedule and the studio’s specific training method.

Personal training studios: tailored and results-driven

For those who are serious about results, a personal training studio is the most effective option. You train one-on-one or in a small group with a professional trainer who tailors your program entirely to your goals.

In the Jordaan, there are several options, from independent trainers who work in parks to fully equipped private studios. Prices range from 50 to 120 euros per session, depending on the trainer and location.

Outdoor training: free but seasonal

Westerpark, within walking distance of the Jordaan, offers opportunities for running, bootcamps and calisthenics. There are pull-up bars and other outdoor fitness equipment. The advantage: it’s free and you’re outdoors.

The downside is obviously the Dutch weather. From November to March, outdoor training isn’t an attractive option for most people. And you’re limited in the exercises you can do without equipment.

The best training spot depends on what you’re looking for:
